A derma pen contains several ultra-small needles. These needles create very small and superficial little holes in the skin, wounding the skin surface. Therefore small channels are created by the needles in the skin. These channels act like wounds, and this stimulates the body’s own healing process, which leads to the release of growth factors, which facilitate the development of new small blood vessels that grow-in and collagen and elastin production is increased. This rejuvenates the skin and makes it plumper resulting in increased elasticity and a younger looking appearance.
The treatment causes only a small tingling sensation.
It is a very effective treatment for rejuvenating skin fundamentally. The body responds to trauma and in this instance it is micro-trauma, which triggers the healing and rejuvenation process of skin. It is effective for treating stretch marks, and improving the elasticity and plumpness of the skin so very effective as an anti-ageing treatment. Also used to improve and repair acne scarring, for reducing fine wrinkles and soften dark spots and it is also used as an adjunct in stimulating hair growth. It works very well when used as a stand-alone treatment or as part of a combined treatment approach in skin rejuvenation. In addition, the absorption of skin products (Vit C serum; Retinol cream; Minoxidil) improves when applied after micro-needling.
The treatment causes only a small tingling sensations, however in most cases we apply local anaesthetic cream 20 minutes prior to starting the treatment and it works well by numbing those areas prior to starting.
A single treatment is not as effective as a series of 3 or 6 treatments done over a couple of weeks. A skin cycle is six weeks in healthy skin. It usually takes 2 to 3 skin cycles before the effects of skin wounding treatments become apparent, but the effects are long lasting especially if the treatments are repeated from time to time to stimulate the tissues.
Very superficial micro-punctate dots of blood appear on the skin. There may also be slight swelling and redness. It looks similar to how the skin appears after some sun exposure with redness that subsides over 2 to 3 days. Your skin will be sensitive after the treatment so it is recommended to use a high SPF (50) cream for a few weeks thereafter. It is a good rule anyway to use SPF factor 50 cream on an ongoing basis to protect your skin against UV irradiation irrespective if you have any treatments or not.
Please note, all the treatments include a consultation, with questions about your goals and objectives, an examination of your skin structure and facial muscle structure, completing a health questionnaire and a consent form. Verbal and written after care instructions will be given to you.
